Goal Statement:
Reflecting on a Two Year Journey of Inquiry into
Sports Leadership and Coaching
Looking back at my goal statement upon entry into the Master's of Arts in Education Program at Michigan State University, I was pleasantly surprised that my overall expectation has remained intact. I wrote two years ago:
The Master's of Arts in Education Program at Michigan State Universitywill help me build and enhance my abilities through the Sports Leadership and Coaching concentration in athletic directing, coaching, and teaching school-age to secondary student athletes. My goals are to begin coaching basketball and baseball at the middle school level with the completion of the program. I believe that this is a solid starting point to implement my newly acquired material. I would then like to work up into the high school ranks and eventually coach at the college level. After that, I envision myself successfully operating and managing an athletic department at a high school, then moving onto the college level.
My hopes are that the Sports and Leadership concentration will provide me with the information and knowledge to create a positive and safe environment for my student athletes. I will strive to establish a successful track record for winning through motivation and an intense work ethic while developing young student athletes into productive citizens who share my desire to contribute and serve the community. I believe that my knowledge of athletics through many years of personal participation, combined with the information from Michigan State's highly ranked Graduate Education program, will allow for me to flourish in leadership roles of coaching and athletic directing. I want to become a recognized name, like so many other great Spartans, that will help shape young student athletes reach their potential on and off the field of play.
Since writing my goal statement in May of 2010, I have played a pivotal role in helping my current school develop cross-country and track/field teams. I still have aspirations to coach baseball and basketball and become an athletic director, but I am currently part of a process of creating a positive and safe environment for students on the Autism Spectrum to enjoy competing in organized athletics. This unexpected opportunity has truly been fantastic. The Sport Leadership and Coaching program through Michigan State University has for surely prepared me to help in this implementation process. I am enthusiastic and thankful that my new skill set has effectively been used to establish an athletic program. My Master's of Arts in Education from Michigan State University has lived up to and exceeded my expectations.
Spartans Will,
